Teaching in schools

Teaching requires a taste for contact and pedagogy. Passing on knowledge, learning and empowering students are among the primary missions of teachers.

Teachers contribute to the personal, intellectual and social development of students. Supervising and monitoring young people is therefore not limited to the classroom. It requires regular contact with parents and collaboration with the teaching team and other professionals in the school environment.

In addition to pedagogical skills, the ability to constantly reflect on one's practice and to work as part of a team are also characteristics of the profession. It is also essential to enjoy taking on challenges.

Beware of the differences between academic knowledge and school knowledge

The school programme presented in a subject can be very different from the approach to that subject at university. A university degree does not, therefore, guarantee mastery of the content that is useful for teaching a subject.

To find out what the syllabuses are, consult the "plan d'études romand (PER)" or the "plans d'études cadres de la maturité gymnasium ou professionnelle". This will enable you to identify the knowledge you need to teach at the level that interests you before entering the HEP Vaud.
