Analysis of MCQ quality

The CSE can analyse the results of Multiple Choice Questionnaires (MCQs) to assess the reliability of the measurement of knowledge or skills used in teaching. This analysis makes it possible to assess whether the questions are adapted to the level of difficulty expected of students and to identify possible biases in the wording of the questions or answers proposed.

Following this analysis, a report is sent to the teachers with suggestions for adjustments to the questions, marking methods or overall structure of the MCQs in order to increase their reliability and accuracy.

This analysis can help answer the following questions:

  • Are there any questions in your exam that are ineffective?
  • Are there any questions or parts of your exam that discriminate more or less strongly against candidates?
  • Do certain students perform better or worse than others ?
  • Which questions in your exam are most closely linked to the final result ?
  • In what proportion do the different questions in your exam measure a common skill or skills?

These few examples are not exhaustive. Feel free to contact us by email to cse-examen@unil.ch so that we may find the suitable answers to your questions about your exams.

Verification of MoodleExam settings

Teachers may request verification of the security settings (timetables, password, proofreading options, access restrictions, other) for exams held on the MoodleExam online platform.

This verification is carried out according to faculty standards (if these have been established in agreement with the faculty administration) or according to individual needs. In the latter case, verification is carried out during a quick meeting via Zoom.

MoodleExam services are offered in collaboration with the pedagogical engineer of your Faculty/School (or equivalent).

  • Upon request by email to cse-examen@unil.ch at least 1 week prior to the exam
  • Verification carried out no later than 24 hours before the exam.

This support also extends to digital exams in BYOD modality,  in which students bring their personal devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.). This support can be requested directly or via the faculties.

Exam proofreading

Teachers may call on the CSE for the techno-pedagogical proofreading of MoodleExam exam questions, including the online submission of assignments, the encoding of answers (MCQs, open-ended questions) and the assessment of e-portfolios.

MoodleExam services are provided in collaboration with the pedagogical engineer of your Faculty/School (or equivalent).

  • Upon request by email to cse-examen@unil.ch at least 15 days before the exam
  • The proofreading is conducted 7 days prior to the exam to allow time for making any necessary changes to the issues raised during the proofreading.

During an exam review, the following points are evaluated:.

  • Verification of the consistency between the exam question and the chosen question format, as well as its parameters/features
  • Verification of the consistency of the question scoring system
  • Verification of the accessibility and ergonomics of the questions
  • Verification of the compatibility of the exam with the use of the exam-unil wifi network
  • Checking the limitations of the exam as set by the MoodleExam platform

A proofreading report is sent to the course teachers and/or assistants responsible for the exam.

Face-to-face support

The CSE can provide on-site support during an exam on MoodleExam. The specifics and duration of the support are to be discussed.

  • This service is provided upon request and subject to availability

Request can be made by email to cse-examen@unil.ch.

This support also extends to digital exams in BYOD mode, for which students bring their personal devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.). This support can be requested directly or via the faculties.
