Green spaces

UNIL's green spaces are under the responsibility of the Parks and Gardens group of the Unibat department, which guarantees sustainable management of these areas.

Nearly 77 hectares of the UNIL campus are made up of extensive meadows (tended and grazed by sheep), fruit trees, organic vines, beehives, protected woodland, hay areas and farmland. Numerous measures for the sustainable maintenance of these areas have been in place for years, including:

Sustainable maintenance of the landscape is a priority for the region.

  • The use of organic products throughout the site and mineral-organic fertilisers on the sports fields. Since 2012, the campus green spaces have not received any chemical pesticides (except on the sports fields).
  • 100% of green waste is recycled on site as compost.
  • Natural mowing by sheep without overpopulating the plots and preserving untouched areas.Sheep help to maintain extensive meadows, save energy and preserve biodiversity and the soil of its green spaces.
  • Promotion of local plant species by planting native species and conservation of biodiversity by preserving the habitat of birds and other small animals.
  • The aim is to structure and complement existing measures to develop a comprehensive action plan to promote and monitor biodiversity.
