Picnics and microwaves

Eating what you've cooked is part of a three-pronged approach: autonomy, sustainability and savings. That's why UNIL provides a number of stations for reheating your meal and various indoor and outdoor picnic spots.

Microwave stations

In brackets you will find the (indicative) number of professional microwaves available to you.

Other microwaves, run directly by institutes and associations, are also available at the following locations:

In collaboration with the FAE, the Direction and Unibat, professional microwave ovens are made available in UNIL buildings. During exam periods and university holidays, a cleaning team from the Unibat service is responsible for the maintenance of these microwave points.

Regular maintenance and careful use will keep your microwave in good working order:

  • 60 seconds is all it takes to reheat your meal in professional microwave ovens,
  • Do not close a container tightly,
  • cover dishes with a lid (bell jar, microwave) to avoid splashing,
  • after each use, wipe down the walls, the inside of the door and the seals with a damp sponge or paper; the cleaning kit is in the trolley or cupboard nearby,
  • do not use microwave ovens for cooking.

Mode of use for Sharp microwave ovens

Professional microwave ovens belong to UNIL.

Café staff are not responsible for cleaning the microwaves.

Take care of the microwaves that are made available, it will soon happen that they will be left for too long and that there will be fewer of them available.

The suitable containers to be used must be:

  • glass
  • plastic designed for use in microwaves (stated on packaging)
  • certain cardboard boxes
  • porcelain or faïence

Never put:

  • material (e.g. metal dish, forks, lid,...)
  • aluminium (e.g. tray,...)
  • certain plastic containers (contamination of foodstuffs by undetectable chemical substances )

Avoid:

  • terracotta dishes
  • certain plastic parts (they can melt or deform)

Check whether your product and its container are compatible with a microwave oven.

Heating food in plastic containers in the microwave can give your dishes a toxic flavour... All plastic packaging can be identified by the resin identification code (a triangle with a number inside indicating the type of plastic used).

NB: some plastics are considered harmless for food use and some are potentially dangerous, even toxic. Find out more to protect your health in the long term.

Picnic

Picnics are permitted at all campus restaurants, with the exception of the Dorigny town restaurant.

The fundamental principle of picnics is to leave the place clean at the end of the meal.

Some simple rules should be observed:

  • bring your own cutlery. The services offered to restaurant customers (crockery, cutlery, napkins, bread, salad dressing, etc.) are not available for picnics.
  • take care of the equipment provided for you (microwaves,...)
  • leave the place clean at the end of your meal
