The Degrees Office is a unit of the UNIL Rectorate, whose role is to produce diplomas and supplementary information, certified copies, Bachelor's or Master's equivalence certificates and awards.
The Degrees Office manages the production of diplomas from request to printing, as well as responding to subsequent requests, for example, for copies. In practice, students who meet the conditions for successful completion of a course must apply to their Faculty after the final results have been published. Depending on how the Faculty is organised, degrees are sent by registered post or handed over at a ceremony.
Certified copies |
Administrative procedures in Switzerland or abroad sometimes require certified copies of documents such as Bachelor's, Master's and PhD certificates, diplomas, diploma supplements and statements of equivalence (for example, for Bachelor's/Master's degrees). All requests should be sent to the Degrees Office. |

Legalisation and translation of degree certificates |
The Degrees Office is not authorised to produce translations and/or legalise documents. In fact, each canton has its own service for legalising documents sent abroad with official signatures. For the Canton of Vaud, the procedure is as follows:
|
Copies of lost or stolen certificates |
If a certificate is lost or stolen, the Degrees Office can provide a duplicate. Requests can be made by e-mail. |
Bachelor's/Master's degree equivalence |
The Degrees Office can produce documents confirming the equivalence between former qualifications (Bachelor's degrees or diplomas) and Master's degrees. Statements of equivalence must be requested by the Faculties, which are the only bodies authorised to check and make a request on behalf of the applicant. |
Requests for gender-neutral degrees |
The University of Lausanne has been awarding degree certificates without any information about the gender of the graduate since January 2023. The Degrees Office can issue copies based on the new model to students who graduated before 2023, in exchange for the original and provided it is possible in technical terms, depending on the format of the certificate. Applying for a PhD certificate |
The title of Doctor is awarded once the thesis has been defended, the official authorisation to publish has been received (imprimatur) and the thesis has been filed with the Bibliothèque Cantonale Universitaire de Lausanne (BCUL). As soon as the Degrees Office receives confirmation that the filing is complete, it produces and sends the certificate to the graduate. For further information: |
