Language Centre

The Language Centre offers language and communication courses to build the key skills needed to study, work and live in an international context. It offers the UNIL community the opportunity to learn Chinese, English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Swiss German.


 

Mission

The Language Centre's objectives are to:

  • Encourage and promote language learning to meet the challenges of international university education and mobility, as well as professional life and lifelong learning.
  • Enable the development of multilingual and intercultural skills so that they can be used appropriately in multiple contexts and for a variety of purposes.
  • Develop language and communication competencies as essential cross-cutting skills.
  • Encourage continuing education for UNIL staff in this area.
  • Provide a support service to the UNIL administration and Faculties on language and multilingualism issues.

Services

Language and communication course provision

  • Standard courses during the semester. The multi-skills, specific skills and exam preparation modules help you to develop strategies and methods for learning a language, broaden existing skills and/or enable you to participate more easily in academic, professional or social life
  • Intensive courses between semesters. Multi-skills modules target rapid progress in a language, outside the constraints of the semester. The special academic modules target skills linked to PhD studies and employability

Independent learning provision

Independent learning offers a number of ways for you to progress at your own pace and according to your own needs, with free access to our multimedia space, guided independent learning with tutoring, or language coaching

The Language Centre offers departments and Faculties at the University of Lausanne support and advice on:

  • General questions relating to multilingualism
  • Setting up specific language courses or validating language skills

Opening hours

The reception desk is open during the semester from 10am to 12.30pm, Monday to Friday (with extended hours for the first two weeks of each semester).
