Assessing your grades

Taking notes is a student skill that you develop throughout your course. So it's important to evaluate your technique from time to time. You'll be able to identify areas for improvement and develop your method.

The five Cs grid

The five Cs grid is used to assess the quality of your grades. To do this, answer each question below.

Are my grades:

  • Completes? Everything important should have been noted.
  • Correct? No mistakes should have been noted.
  • Compact? Notes should be synthetic.
  • Compatible? The notes should match your way of proofreading and studying.
  • CompréhensibleUnderstandable? The message should be rephrased in your own words.

Don't forget to compare your note-taking with that of your classmates. This is a good way of checking whether the material is understood and developing your technique.
