A sustainable university

Through its Faculty of Science and Environment (FGSE), UNIL places sustainability at the heart of its teaching and research. As a major issue of our time, the environment is analysed, dissected and studied through the many research and teaching disciplines offered by the University of Lausanne.

In addition to the resources it is equipping itself with in order to glimpse a greener future, UNIL has been able to bring together different local partners around the same table on several occasions in a participatory research approach and to include all the players concerned by environmental issues. The University of Lausanne, notably as part of the major Volteface project, has thus demonstrated its closeness to its local area, a mission that it considers to be a priority.

At the heart of research

Environmental research has always been an interdisciplinary field of study at UNIL. Within the FGSE itself, researchers are united under the banner of both the life and environmental sciences and the humanities and social sciences. Deeply and intrinsically multi-factorial, the issues linked to the environment are thus approached, for example, from the angle of the history of the earth, research on lakes or glaciers, as well as through the prism of the relationship between humans and nature.

Given the strong interest shown by its scientists and the need to understand and take action in the face of climate change and its visible consequences, UNIL has inaugurated a new research centre on climate change; visible, UNIL has inaugurated in 2019 an Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability (CID), which brings together under a single banner all the researchers œuating on a daily basis in environmental research.
