Useful employment-related information

Students from EU/EFTA countries

To be gainfully employed in Switzerland as a student. As a student holding a B or L permit, it is essential to obtain a work permit.

The employer must complete the form “demande d^un titre de séjour UE-AELE”  by the Service de la population - Division Etrangers (SPOP).

The student must then obtain a favourable opinion from UNIL from the Social Affairs and Student Mobility Unit (SASME), and then submit the form to the residents' registration office in her commune of residence.

During the university holidays, they are authorised to work full-time for a maximum of 3 months per year.

Students from the European Union are authorised to work as soon as they arrive in Switzerland.

However, students from non-EU countries are not permitted to work for the first 6 months of their stay in Switzerland.

It is compulsory for students to complete a tax return and declare all their income, regardless of the amount. Salaried employment is considered to be incidental when it is less than 30% of a full-time job and is carried out in parallel with studies or for a short period (e.g. holidays). Earnings from a secondary activity are taxable after any flat-rate deductions have been made.

Tax at source

Students with a B or L permit who work for a company are subject to withholding tax.

Article 133 paragraph 3 LI stipulates that a person subject to withholding tax may, until 31 March of the following year, request the tax authorities to rectify their withholding tax to take into account deductions in addition to those contained in the tax scales.

This deadline is mandatory and there are no exceptions.

To do this, the taxpayer must submit a simplified tax return to the Withholding Tax Section within the above-mentioned deadline.
